Balinale
Overview
Balinale (Bali International Film Festival) is a film festival held each year in beautiful Bali. Since 2007, it has brought together stories and the people who tell them, welcoming filmmakers, audiences, and communities from Indonesia and around the world to share in a love of cinema.
In 2024, Balinale proudly became an Academy Award® Qualifying Film Festival, moving it to a global stage and providing a platform for film makers to showcase their work on an international stage. This announcement and the upcoming 20 year anniversary was the catalyst for Balinale wanting to firmly define it’s brand, purpose and vision for the future.

Juicebox was thrilled to be invited to work alongside the team to help to express and define a brand set for the moment, and for the years ahead. We helped to craft a brand system that honours nearly two decades of impact while creating space for what’s next: expanded programs, community workshops, and cultural events that go beyond the festival, with the festival remaining firmly at the heart of it all.

Stories worth remembering
The new tagline “Stories Worth Remembering” captures the authentic essence of what Balinale is about: the shared experience of cinema. When you laugh, I laugh. When you're moved to tears, I feel it too. That's the power of film. It connects us through emotion, empathy, and memory.
Balinale creates space for those moments. Its programs are personal, its atmosphere welcoming. Everyone is invited — filmmakers, students, film lovers, communities — to experience stories that matter, and to connect in ways that feel real.
Balinale’s Evolving Identity
We began with a careful review of the existing logo. While it had served the festival well, we saw an opportunity to enhance its clarity and impact. The original composition presented certain visual challenges including hierarchy, balance, and typographic consistency. Our intent was not to replace the character of the identity, but to strengthen its foundation and improve its legibility and versatility.
In this refreshed approach, “Balinale” takes clear prominence, establishing a stronger and more unified brand presence. The new wordmark uses a clean sans-serif typeface with subtle refinements such as softened edges to express both professionalism and warmth.
Throughout this process, we remained deeply respectful of Balinale’s cultural roots. The umbul-umbul a ceremonial banner widely used in Balinese tradition has long been associated with the festival. By bringing new clarity to the logo while preserving the spirit of the umbul-umbul, the updated identity reflects both continuity and progress. It honors tradition while preparing Balinale for its next chapter.

Building a Versatile and Meaningful Visual System
With the revitalized logo as our foundation, we set out to build a brand system that would be as adaptable as it is expressive, one that could fluidly extend across every interaction Balinale has with its audiences. Whether experienced on a digital screen, at a physical venue, or through a social media story, the visual system needed to maintain coherence while offering flexibility.

Color Palette: Symbolism Meets Energy
The black-and-white foundation draws from Bali’s poleng cloth, a sacred symbol of harmony and duality, a perfect parallel to the emotional contrasts found in film. By adopting black and white as Balinale’s core colors, we root the brand in this powerful local philosophy, instantly grounding it in meaning and place.
But a festival is also a celebration of creativity, emotion, and boundless possibility. To reflect this, we introduced vibrant accent colors that serve as emotional amplifiers. A rich, fiery red echoing the passion of the filmmakers and the charged atmosphere of the festival itself. Alongside it, a deep, enigmatic purple adds a note of intrigue and imagination, evoking the transformative experience of storytelling, where reality bends, and magic becomes believable.

Brand Device: A Living Symbol of Movement and Meaning
Beyond color and type, every great visual identity needs a living, breathing design element, something that carries meaning, adds motion, and brings coherence to the brand’s ecosystem. For Balinale, we found inspiration once again in Balinese cultural symbolism: the umbul-umbul.
From this, we created a fluid design motif that mimics the gentle arc and flowing movement of the umbul-umbul. This form became more than just an ornamental flourish. It can evolved into a brand device that could shape-shift to serve many roles and might appear as a container for photography, wrapping around imagery to create a sense of intimacy and narrative framing. It might repeat to form a rhythmic pattern, resembling waves of poleng dancing in the wind.



Translating Identity to Digital Experience
A great brand deserves a great digital presence. We began Balinale’s new website journey with thorough UX discovery, mapping a sitemap that anticipates the festival’s evolving needs over the coming years.
Key insight: Balinale’s digital platform must flex across multiple event phases — film submission, active festival, and post-festival content. We custom-designed modules that seamlessly adapt to each phase while maintaining intuitive user experience and high visual coherence with the new brand.
The visual system’s flexibility empowered us to create a website that feels fresh, vibrant, and unmistakably Balinale for every step of the journey.
